NTCP on Organic Soybean in Brgy. Palacapac, Candon, Ilocos Sur

The implementation of the project, "Enhancing Organic Soybean Production and Processing for Improved Local Supply and Utilization in Region 1" is a complete success story of Palacapac Seventh-Day Adventist Church group waiting to be heard.

The project on organic soybeans, funded under the DA-HVCDP coordinated by Bureau of Agricultural Research's (BAR) National Technology Commercialization Program (NTCP), aims to improve the overall production of locally-produced organic soybeans which has been proven to be cheaper and has better quality compared to the imported ones.

Ms. Melinda Calumpit, project leader from the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office (DA-RFO) 1, underscored that Candon is the only city in the region that has all the key players in the organic soybean industry actively involved altogether: farmers, processors, and consumers. Among the products that they were able to develop include soymilk, tofu, cookies, and muffins.

NTCP is one of the banner programs of BAR and is being implemented nationwide. The Soybean program which was revitalized in 2011 is facilitated by BAR-TCD under its NTCP, highlights R&D breakthroughs and mature technologies generated and developed by research institutions. It has been instrumental in developing micro-enterprises and various agribusiness ventures through the provision of technical assistance and the much-needed fund support to enhance product and process development founded on sound business model principles. ###
