Breadfruit Farmers’ Field Day and Technology Showcase



OIC-Assistant Director Digna L. Sandoval of the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) graced the Farmers’ Field Day and Technology Showcase on Breadfruit Production on 9 August 2018 at Davao Region Central Experiment Station (DARCES), Manambulan, Tugbok District, Davao City

Organized by the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office (DA-RFO) 11, Research Division, the activity showcased Package of Technology on breadfruit to farmers and other stakeholders. This activity is part of a BAR-funded project titled, “Survey, Characterization, Evaluation and Maintenance of Breadfruit from Nursery to Bearing Stage in Region 11”. The afternoon session provided a demonstration on the asexual propagation of breadfruit using different rootstocks.

In attendance were DA-RFO 11 Regional Technical Director Angelina S. Pancho, representing Regional Executive Director Engr. Ricardo Oñate, Jr. and researchers from the region; farmers from Montevista, Compostela Valley Province, namely: Tapia Organic Farming Association, Concepcion Multi-purpose Cooperative, Concepcion Small Farming Association, and Canidkid Upland Farmers Association. Also present were local government unit (LGU) technicians and representatives from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG); Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of Montevista, Compostela Valley Province; MAO of Tugbok District and Marilog District of Davao City; and MAO of Don Marcelino, Davao City Occidental.

To date, BAR has supported five projects on breadtfruit covering benchmarking studies and researches on pest management, propagation techniques, nursery establishment, and product development and commercialization implemented by the different R&D institutions. Based on the results of the DA-RFO 11-BAR project on breadfruit, breadnut had the highest graft success at 82 percent with 75 percent graft survival. ###
