6th National Vegetable Congress

This year’s congress carries the theme, “Commercializing Small hold Vegetable Production for Global Competitiveness”. The Ormoc City Federation of Vegetable Producers is the host of the activity with 418 participants from the various national government agencies, provincial and municipal local government units, state universities and universities (SUCs), farmers’ associations, RAFC, PAFC, input suppliers, and product exhibitors.
 
Giving the overview of the event is President Edgardo Codilla. “Vegetable industry in the Philippines is characterized by a mixture of small, medium, and large farms. With this kind of structure, there is a need for our vegetable growers to unite their efforts in order to create an impact on food security and poverty alleviation,” President Codilla explains.
 
In behalf of Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap, Assistant Secretary attends the event. In his speech, he cites various government’s interventions to increase production consumption on vegetable. “We at the DA through the GMA-High Value Commercial Crop (HVCC) Program is addressing major concerns throughout the entire vegetable chain supply from production, postharvest, processing, transport and marketing,” Salacup says.


Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) Assistant Director Teodoro S. Solsoloy presents the Research, Development and Extension Program on Vegetables 2006-2010 in behalf of Director Nicomedes P. Eleazar who was not able to attend the activity. He discusses the five issues enumerated with corresponding recommendations anchored to increase production through adoption of location-specific technologies and the reduction of costs of wage goods.
 
Ms. Mary Ann Sayoc of East West Seed Company inquires on how to access on production technologies. Asst. Dir. Solsoloy answers this through conduct of Technology Forum and publication of matured technologies.
