Carrying the theme, “Harnessing genetic and ecosystem diversity for sustainable agriculture”, officers and members of the Crop Science Society of the Philippines (CSSP) together with other R&D partners in the field of crop science convened to conduct the 40th Annual Scientific Conference and Anniversary. Dr. Nicomedes P. Eleazar, director of BAR, delivers his keynote address. In his speech he highlighted the importance of the event and how crops scientists plays a relevant part in accomplishing the long term endeavor of the country towards sustainability. “Research in ecosystem diversity is in the right direction. Our commitment to conserving our genetic diversity provides the natural capital for our human economies. The variety of our resources plays a crucial role in ensuring food security in the country, not to mention the substantial income it can provide to our poor farmers. Through the diverse plant and crop species, in addition to the traditional ones, the country’s food demand is continuously met,” he said.
 
In recognition of BAR’s continuous support to the Society and for gracing the occasion, Dr. Eleazar is awarded the plaque of appreciation. Dr. Eleazar is also the recipient of the CSSP Dr. William D. Dar Award for Outstanding Research Administrator.

To keep the occasion light and relax, the USEP Dance Troupe provides an intermission number staging their native Mindanaoan folkloric performances.
