Indigenous Plants for Health and Wellness

In view of the Proclamation No. 1280 declaring the month of October 2007 and every year thereafter as the “National Health and Wellness Tourism Month, the DA through BAR launched the Indigenous Plants for Health and wellness Program

With its mandate to support agriculture and research and development activities, this program of BAR on “Indigenous Plants for Health and Wellness” will take into consideration Philippine biodiversity. Plant species other than the conventional food crops will be studied for their health promoting values. A better appreciation and utilization of our plant resources will ensure better plant conservation. Needless to say, this program can also help improve the health status of the nation and even boost the local economy.

Indigenous plants will, thus, be studied as functional foods and source of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals and of raw materials for the industry. All these are geared towards the promotion of health and wellness in man.

Agriculture being concerned with primary production, cultivation and postharvest handling of these plants for health and wellness are integral parts of the program. Germplasm collection and genetic improvement will be considered for selected plants and the development and commercialization of herbal products will also be considered in the overall scheme.
