2017 World Food Day

17 October 2016
Liwasang Aurora, Quezon City Memorial Circle, Quezon City

The Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) joined the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the Department of Agriculture (DA) in the culmination of the 2017 World Food Day (WFD) celebration held on 17 October 2016 at Liwasang Aurora, Quezon City Memorial Circle, Quezon City.

This year’s the theme, “Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development” highlights the issue of migration and how to address the various root causes of migration such as hunger, poverty and climate change. FAO, together with its partners, is addressing migration by helping people rebuild livelihoods through giving farmers the right tools, teaching them techniques to produce more with what they have, helping rural people access money to start profitable activities and providing rural youth with other income-generating opportunities.

One of the highlights of the activity was the candle-lighting ceremony and reading of the WFD 2017 Pledge together with the officials and employees of the DA, and FAO representatives.

WFD is celebrated annually every October to commemorate the founding of FAO in 1945. It is being participated in by food security advocates in over 150 countries across the world. ###
