BAR and UP-NSRI Public Seminar

Dr. Pierangeli G. Vital of the University of the Philippine Diliman presented the results of her study titled “Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) of Escherichia coli from Various Agricultural Sources for Food Quality Monitoring” in a public seminar organized and sponsored by Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR)on 4 May 2018.

Dr. Vital, a senior scientist research fellow, is a grantee of the "DA-BAR and University of the Philippines -Natural Sciences Research Institute (UP-NSRI) Post-Doctoral and Senior Scientist Research Fellowship in Basic Research in Agriculture in Fisheries".

Her study focused on using MLST to provide a unique profile for E. coli that can help explain the sources and reservoirs of the microorganism in agricultural food including fruits and vegetables and determine its host preference and virulence which can be potential to human infection. The study aimed to address several issues, specifically microbial contamination in fresh agricultural commodity produce.

Ms. Digna L. Sandoval, head of the BAR-Institutional Development Division, delivered the opening message in behalf of BAR Director Nicomedes P. Eleazar. Also present during the event were Dr. Windell L. Rivera, director of UP-NSRI; Dr. Ernelea P. Cao, director UP-Institute of Biology; and BAR’s R&D partners from DA attached agencies and staff bureaus, regional field offices, and state universities and colleges.

To date, 16 promising scientists have been supported by the program contributing to the increasing number of qualified researchers and skilled scientists in the agri-fisheries sector in the country. ###
