Volume 2 No. 2

The Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Regional Field Office No.2 (BFAR-RFO 2) will invest P0.8 million in a one-year fishery development project in Batanes.

Sabtang
Municipality of Sabtang, site of spiny lobster project

The project entitled "Fishery Research, Development and Management Projects for the Province of Batanes" will be implemented by the Provincial government through the Office of the Provincial Fishery Officer. It will also involve collaborations between UP-Marine Science Institute (MSI), UP Visayas (UPV), and Central Luzon State University (CLSU).

The project aims to generate baseline information on the status of selected fishery resources in Batanes, provide technical assistance on fishery postharvest technologies and on the development and management of aquaculture areas in the province in order to increase the limited supply of fish during periods of typhoons.

This will be done upon the implementation of five subprojects particularly spiny lobster assessment; broodstock enhancement and grow-out culture in Sabtang; dissemination of technologies for processing of flying fish & dorado; assessment of seaweeds, other aquatic flora, finfishes and coconut crabs; stocking of tilapia in freshwater areas in municipalities of Basco and Uyugan; and the improvement and maintenance of a tilapia hatchery in Uyugan. The initial operations of the latter will have technical assistance from BFAR-RFO. 2.

With these projects, BAR and BFAR will further develop the fishery resources of Batanes' vast territorial waters which reach an area of about 4,500 sq km.
