RDE team leaders visit Negros
Louise Hazel Trinidad
October 1999
Special Issue

The National RDE Team Leaders held their quarterly consultation in Bacolod last September 20,1999. It included field visitation which aimed to expose the National RDE Network Team Leaders to the various agricultural and fisheries activities within the Negros Island.

RDE team leaders
Mr. Ponce, manager of ECJ, discussed with the network leaders on how they processed and packaged durian in their farm.

The participants visited La Granja Agricultural Research Center (LGARC) La Granja, Cojuangco Farm (ECJ and Sons)- Ara-al, Candelaria and VY Domingo Prawn and Fish Farm San Enrique, a daybefore the consultation.

La Granja Agricultural Research Center (LGARC), is composed of research stations operated by UPLB-College of Agriculture, SRA, BPI and the DA-WESVIARC Research Outreach Station. Mr. Penuela of BPI toured the group around the complex particularly the Tissue Culture Laboratory for sugarcane and ornamental plants.

The group proceeded to Cojuangco Farm (ECJ and Sons) after and was met by Mr.Alfonso Ponce Enrile, the manager. ECJ and Sons has 10,000 has. of trial plantations for aromatic coconut, mansanitas, 'batwan' (a seed used for sinigang) and ornamental plants. It also has a durian farm, mango plantation and langka plantation.

The group first visited the Durian Farm. The participants had the opportunity to taste the various varieties processed in the farm. Some durian is being processed and sold as frozen meat while some are processed into candy paste. Packaging is also done within the farm.

The mango plantation, which is about 1,000 hectares already had mangoes planted but the trees are not yet in their productive stage.

The group also toured the langka plantation which was about 1,000 hectares which the guide claimed as only for trial planting.

Mr. Enrile briefed the participants on the over-all operations of the Cojuangco Farm. The team leaders and the farm manager interacted actively as they exchange technologies and experiences. They also discussed the possibility for future collaboration between their respective networks with the farm.

The last stop was the VY Domingo Farm. The group witnessed the harvesting of prawns with an average weight of 35-38 gms. each. The farm uses water from the tilapia ponds adjacent to the prawn farms to reduce the occurrence of luminous bacteria in the prawn farm This results to an improved yield or production of prawn harvest.

The tilapia fish farm practices the production of an all-male sex-reversed tilapia fry. These saline resistant and fast growing tilapia fry are also cultured in ponds up to marketable size. They observed that all-male population produces a more homogenous size during harvest.

The team leaders saw and experienced the different agriculture and fisheries activities and practices of Negros. They were able to observe on a first hand basis what the prides of the place has to offer. Because of this, the team leaders hope that similar undertakings are done for better results and outputs.
