NICGIS for food security and environment preservation
Louise Hazel Trinidad
October 1999
Special Issue

The National Infrastructure Center for Geospatial How to establish NICGIS Information System (NICGIS) would provide maps NICGIS can be DA's needed to avoid the economic and environmental degradation in the country It will also provide the scientific knowledge needed to balance sustainable development, economic progress, food and water securityand in meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

Dr. Steve Godilano, Geospatial Information Specialist from the International Rice Research Institute(IRRI) gave a lecture on NICGIS during the BAR seminar series last August 18, 1999 at the ATI-BAR-CERDAF Conference Room. He discussed the possible CERDAF Conference Room He discussed the possible benefits and implications of setting up of a NICGIS in the Philippines. According to Godilano, NCGIS will help predict the weather and provide information on how to preserve our natural resources.

Advantages of NICGIS
The NICGIS would make accurate and timely geographic data readily available to support sound decisions over a geographic area with minimum duplication of effort and at a reasonable cost.

Once NICGIS is created, it will support the application of geospatial data in transportation, community development, agriculture, emergency response, environment management, local governance and information technology.

How to Establish NICGIS
NICGIS can be established through DA's partnership with national and local agencies, academic institutions and private organizations.

The new partners will then integrate existing data into specific basemaps. They will also collect, assess and provide access to scientific information needed to understand the current status of the nation's natural resources, how the status change and what cause the changes.

For its completion, NICGIS needs the following resource requirements: complete Landsat 7 satellite coverage of the entire archipelago as the basemap . It will be geo-referenced to the topographic map archives at NAMRIA

NICGIS will be beneficial to the environment. This technology will provide a better understanding of the effects of the climate change. It will also help in deriving new economic wealth from natural resources at the same time helps in the rehabilitation of the degrading environment.

"Through this technology; Dr. Godilano also hopes that the National Information Network (NIN) of the Department of Agriculture will give access to more information for the whole RDE family.
