One of the many problems in developing agricultural
R&D systems is the absence of an instantly available and
accessible quality scientific information. This was the consensus
of the 35 participants at the BAR- sponsored seminar on The
Essential Electronic Library TEEAL) last May 3 at the DA-ITCAF
Training Room.
Also called Library in a Box, TEEAL was presented by Dr.
Jan Olsen, Asst. Director of International Agricultural Program
of the Albert R. Mann University.
She demonstrated TEEAL, a stand-alone compact library that
uses microcomputer, compact disk reader, and laser printer.
TEEAL provides access to the world's most valuable journals
in the following fields in agriculture:
- Crop Production
- Sustainable Systems
- Plant Diseases
- Dairy and Meat Farming
- Rural Demographics
- Health Related to Foods
- Farm Mechanics
- Tillage and Soils
- Agricultural Economics
- Natural Resources
- The Environment
- Food Science
- Animal and Human Nutrition
- Forestry
- Genetic Resources and Breeding
- Tropical Plants
It also has complete text images of 130 of the
most important scholarly journals in the world, an index and
image software.
Dr. Olsen admitted Cornell's difficulty in looking
for financial resources in developing this electronic-based
source of information. "It took us ten years," she
said.
She encouraged BAR, despite funding difficulties, to go for
TEEAL, because research and develop-
ment truly require good access to existing bodies of knowledge
on various disciplines which is essential for progress.
"The availability of a source of information
TEEAL can help R&D systems develop the technology for
enhanced agricultural self-sufficiency", she said.
Dr. Olsen held consultation with the participants
after the demo and open forum. The attendees were 35 librarians,
information officers, and analysts from different offices
and universities involved in the R&D activities, including
USM, CLSU and BAS.
