R&D updates: mango symposium in Guimaras held

The Mango Network headed by Dr. Hemani Golez, sponsored a
mango symposium on May 22 in Guimaras province.

| New technologies for
mango growers will enable them to produce world class
mango products. |
The Mango Symposium was one of the activities
of the Manggahan Sa Guimaras '99, a week- long celebration
of the island province's charter day anniversary.
The aim of the mango symposium was to update small mango
farmers and other mango growers on new technologies to enable
them to produce world I; class mango products.
Over a hundred farmers and guests attended the symposium
at the Barangay Training Center in the provincial capitol
compound in San Miguel, Jordan.
BAR participated through a P10, 000 donation and a four-man
observation/documentation party headed by ICD Chief Cenon
S. Atienza.
Presented during the symposium were the following research
papers:
- Status of the Mango Industry by Dr. H. Golez, NMRDC,
Guimaras
- Establishment of Mango Orchard by Dr. C. Oliveros,
DOST Region III
- Fertilization and Irrigation by Mr. R. Bugayong, Bayer
Philippines
- Flower Induction by Ms. M. Viniegas, DA-RFU- 7
- Integrated Pest Management by Dr. O. Opina, UPLB
- Harvesting and Postharvest Handling by Dr. E. Esguerra,
UPLB
- Mango Processing by Ms S. Covacha, NMRDC, Guimaras
- Mango Information Network by Director Z. Teruel, DOST
Region VI
Induction of the Mango Growers Association members
and officers by Sen. Franklin Drilon followed the symposium.
