Last October 12-15, delegates from different
Asian and European countries met in Beijing, China for the
annual Asia-Europe Ministers' Meeting (ASEM) for S&T.
The participants discussed issues and concerns pertaining
to ASEM S&T cooperation in the 21st century. The countries
represented in the meeting were: Austria, Belgium, Brunei
Darussalam, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea (Rep. of), Luxembourg,
Malaysia, the Netherlands, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore,
Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, Vietnam along with
representatives from the European Commission for research.
The Philippine delegation composed of DOST Secretary Filemon
Uriarte, Jr., S&T experts from DOST, and BAR Assistant
Director Jovita Corpuz stressed that the Philippines' top
priority is high impact research and not basic research due
to the inadequacy of funds for S&T endeavors. The areas
for potential cooperation sought by the Philippine delegation
were in the fields of information technology, S&T information
exchange, and human resource development.
The other delegates also gave their respective concerns
for ASEM cooperation, which focused mostly on high-end research
in the fields of engineering, physics, meteorology, and natural
calamities.
China, Korea, Thailand, Finland, and the European
Commission for research were assigned to follow-up proposals
made in the meeting. Korea was also chosen as the venue for
the next meeting in the Year 2000.
