The Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), throughtheInformation and Communication Technology Section (ICTS), conducted the Agriculture and Fisheries Research and Development Information System (AFRDIS) review and meeting on September 4, 2003 at the BAR CERDAF Conference Room. AFRDIS is a comprehensive information system for research and development (R&D) in agriculture and fisheries established to strengthen the knowledge management capabilities and capacities of the National Research and Development System for Agriculture and Fisheries (NaRDSAF).

The AFRDIS team leaders of 20 partner institutions belonging to the 1st and 2nd batch attended the review and meeting. These were: Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Isabela State University (ISU), Philippine Carabao Center (PCC), Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE), Central Luzon State University (CLSU), PhilRice, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), Leyte State University (LSU), Mindanao State University (MSU), Central Mindanao State University (CMU), University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Ilocos Integrated Agricultural Research Center (ILIARC), Central Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (CENVIARC), Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (WESVIARC), Eastern Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (EVIARC), Northern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center (NOMIARC), Southern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center (SMIARC), Central Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center (CEMIARC), and the Philippine Coconut Authority – Davao Research Center (PCA-DRC).

This activity revisited AFRDIS objectives to ensure that all plans of activities and concerns are undertaken in line with its goals. Together with the progress review, this activity was held to ensure that project implementation is proceeding according with the project plan and budget. Some of these projects were: (1) instituting the national reference and nodal centers of AFRDIS and (2) the Geographic Targeting of Agricultural Research and Technology Information System Project (GIS-ARTIS) undertaken by PhilRice. The AFRDIS concept and conditions of participating institutions were presented during the meeting. Duties and responsibilities of partner institutions were also discussed while the accomplishments of the AFRDIS 1st batch were reviewed. The participants identified problems encountered during the implementation and discussed possible solutions to resolve these problems. Finally, BAR and the participating agencies planned activities for 2004.

At the end of the review and meeting, partner institutions were issued cheques as part of the financial grant provided to AFRDIS members to support the establishment of local area networks (LAN) in R&D institutions.
