BAR & GMA-Corn hold 1st Annual Philippine Corn Symposium
by Thea Kristina M. Pabuayon
For
the first time in the Philippines, the Bureau of Agricultural
Research (BAR) through its Grains Sector Development
Program (GSDP)-White Corn and Corn Substitutes Research
Sub-componnet, together with the Ginintuang Masaganang
Ani-Corn (GMA-Corn), the National Corn RDE Network and
the Philippine Corn Research Institute (PhilCorn) is
set to hold the Annual Corn Symposium and Planning Workshop
from January 15 to 17, 2003 at Calamba, Laguna.
The corn conference is held to assess
the corn industry situation in the country. This will
take into account information exchange and updates on
the latest corn technologies, approaches and policies,
and an inventory of corn RDE programs, projects and
activities in all 15 regions in the last four years.
Participants include key players in the
corn research, development and extension sector, including
DA agencies and bureaus and the privatsector. Newly
appointed DA Secretary Luis Lorenzo, DA Asec. Segfredo
Serrano and UPLB Chancellor Wilfredo David and National
Corn RDE Adviser Emiliana Bernardo will also grace the
event.
The three-day activity will feature concurrent
policy and technical paper presentations from the various
agencies and organizations on Genetic Improvement and
Biotechnology, Agricultural Resources and Management,
Knowledge Management and Extension, and Information
Technology/Socio-economics. Participants will also be
divided into three groups to come up with position and
policy papers and RDE agenda and programs on trade and
marketing, feed industry status and prospects, and food
processing and utilization status and prospects.
The GSDP is one of the country's prime
movers of government programs in grains productivity,
food security and poverty alleviation, including the
Ginintuang Masaganang Ani for rice and corn, among others.
Meanwhile, DA-BAR implements a GSDP sub-component project
on white corn and corn substitutes research, while its
National Corn RDE Network coordinates and guides the
overall formulation, implementation, monitoring and
evaluation of the country's corn RDE programs.
