New DOST head speaks in women's
seminar
by Laarni C. Anenias
"Integrate the issue of gender in
every aspect of science and technology. Provide role
models for young people. Engage in proactive information
campaigns." These were the main message of newly
appointed Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro of the Department
of Science and Technology (DOST), to encourage women
in taking up careers in science and technology (S&T).
She said these during the Seminar on Promoting the Role
of Women held on 26 March 2001 at the Executive Lounge
of the Philippine Coconut Authority, where she served
as the keynote speaker.
She also cited the need for more R&D
initiatives on women's health and gender mainstreaming
to address the prevailing gender issues in S&T.
Human resource utilization in the country will be more
efficient when more women are engaged in the male-dominated
S&T field, she added. Dr. Alabastro is the first
woman secretary of the DOST.
The event was part of the Women's Month
Celebration of PCA. The Joint Organization of Women
Inventors, Scientists, and Technologists, also known
as JOWISTS, organized the event.
