BAR grants P5M for the establishment of DA-RFRDC region 6

The DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research has recently awarded a total of P5M institutional development support to the DA-Regional Fisheries Research and Development Center (RFRDC) in Region 6. This support intended to accelerate the development and establishment of the new research center in Pototan, Iloilo. Also, the grant will be used in the procurement of necessary research facilities and equipment to hasten the implementation of R&D projects and activities in the region.

The research center's integrated regional R&D programs will be tied to modernizing the three fisheries sub-sector namely: Aquaculture: development of sustainable aquaculture; Capture Fisheries: integrated fishery resource management of Panay gulf; and Post harvest and Marketing: integrated and diversified processing of small pelagics, mussels, oysters and seaweeds.

Based on the site development plan submitted by the Region VI to BAR, the project component will cover the construction of administrative building, dormitory, recreational area, motor pool, treatment plant, perimeter fence and lighting, landscaping, power house and quarters.

On the other hand, the equipment and facilities necessary for the operationalization of the center include: office facilities (fax machine, computers, projectors, etc.,), dissolve oxygen meter, refractometer 0.75 Hp pressure tank with motor, and radio communication equipment.

It is perceived that the center needs to upgrade its technological capability to effectively undertake various R&D programs, technical training, information and support services to benefit its intended clienteles particularly the fisherfolk. Likewise, the center will undertake projects to generate appropriate fisheries technologies that are sustainable and environmentally sound that will address the long-standing problems in fishery industry.
