Garrity is 4th ICRAF director general
The Board of Trustees of the International
Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) has appointed
Dr. Dennis Garrity as its new Director General. The
appointment shall take effect starting 1 October 2001.
Dr. Garrity founded ICRAF's collaborative
research and development activities in Southeast Asia.
This Southeast Asia program came to be ICRAF's largest
regional program with over 40 international and national
staff working in six countries. His major contributions
to the field of agroforestry include: the systems improvement
research in the humid tropics of the region to develop
and evaluate alternatives to slash ad burn agriculture;
developed conservation-oriented systems for sloping
uplands; developed institutional innovations related
to farmer-led organizations in sustainable agriculture
and natural resources management; and promotion of the
Landcare movement in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Garrity studied at the Ohio State
University for his BSc in agriculture, University of
the Philippine at Los Baños for his MSc in agronomy,
and University of Nebraska for his PhD in crop physiology.
He was an agronomist and crop ecologist and head of
the Agroecology Unit at the International Rice Research
Institute from 1982-1992.
