Garrity is 4th ICRAF director general

The Board of Trustees of the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) has appointed Dr. Dennis Garrity as its new Director General. The appointment shall take effect starting 1 October 2001.

Dr. Garrity founded ICRAF's collaborative research and development activities in Southeast Asia. This Southeast Asia program came to be ICRAF's largest regional program with over 40 international and national staff working in six countries. His major contributions to the field of agroforestry include: the systems improvement research in the humid tropics of the region to develop and evaluate alternatives to slash ad burn agriculture; developed conservation-oriented systems for sloping uplands; developed institutional innovations related to farmer-led organizations in sustainable agriculture and natural resources management; and promotion of the Landcare movement in Southeast Asia.

Dr. Garrity studied at the Ohio State University for his BSc in agriculture, University of the Philippine at Los Baños for his MSc in agronomy, and University of Nebraska for his PhD in crop physiology. He was an agronomist and crop ecologist and head of the Agroecology Unit at the International Rice Research Institute from 1982-1992.
