First APEC workshop on agricultural technology
transfer
and training

BAR Director Eliseo R. Ponce, together
with Dr. Santiago Obien of the Philippine Rice REsearch
Institute and ATI Director Edwin E. Acoba attended the
First APEC Workshop on Agrciultural Technology Transfer
and Training held at the sari Pan Pacific Hotel in Jakarta,
Indonesia from 25-26 January 2000.
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) was established in 1989 in response to the growing
interdependence among Asia-Pacific economies. Its goal
si to advance Asia-Pacific economic dynamism and sense
of community. Today, APEC include all major economies
in the region with the most dynamic and fastest growing
economies in the world. APEC's 21-member economies had
a combined Gross domestic Product of over US$16 trillion
in 1996 and 45% of global trade.
In recognition of the imporatnce of work
on agrocultural technicl cooperation, the Agricutural
Technical Cooperation experts Group (ATCEG) was established
in November 1996 as a formal APEC body with a continuing
role. This group agreed upon a work program of joint
actiities to enhance agriculture's contribution to the
region's economic growth and social well-being, and
developed a framework for undertaking cooperative activities.
One of the seven priority areas of ATCEG
is Agricultural Technology Transfer and Training (ATTT).
This first workshop on ATTT aimed to exchange information
and determine future specific activities based on the
action plan for ATTT among APEC member economies for
the next three years (2000-2002). The workshop included
plenary presentation and a post-conference tour to some
agricultural research institutes and trainig centers
in Jakarta. The papers prsented during the plenary covered
the following topics:
- Policy on Agricultural Technology Transfer
and Training (ATTT) - the case of Indonesia
- Investment Opportunity on ATTT
- Establishment of ATTT Network
- Prospect of Establishing Joint ATTT program
- ATTT Action Plan and Working Mechanism for the Next
Three Years (2000-2002)
As an offshoot o fthe workshop, the philippine
delegates agreed to establish a Philippine ATTT Program
in support to agriculture and fisheries modernization.
