BAR's senior project adviser attends international meeting on biosafety

Dr. Saturnina C. Halos, Senior Project Adviser of the Bureau of Agricultural Research, was invited by the Department of Foreign Affairs to be a member of the Philippine delegation to the Resumed Session of the First Extraordinary Meeting of the Conference of Parties (ExCOPI) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in montreal, Canada on 24-28 January 2000.

The participation of Dr. halos provided the Philippine negotiating panel the technical backstopping on the areas of biodiversity, biosafety and biotechnology. The meeting was important to Philippine agricultural development. One of the major issues discussed was the Draft Protocol on Biosafety - a document that will guide the Department of Agriculture in the formulation of policies for the entry in commercial quantities of GMOs and similar biotechnology products as well as their production and commercialization in the country.

Dr. Halos has been actively involved in the formulation of the Philippine position on this matter. She is a member of the DA-BioTAG and the Interagency Committee on Biological and Genetic Resources. The national body is in-charge of the proper implementation of Executive Order 247 - Prescribing Guidelines and Establishing a Regulatory Framework for the Prospecting of Biological and Genetic Resources and their By-Products and derivatives for Scientific, Commercial and other purposes.
