DA 3rd O! May Gulay Cooking Contest
(PINAKAmasarap na Lutong Gulay)


I. Background

To show its support for the National Nutrition Month Celebration, the Department of Agriculture is hosting the 3rd O! May Gulay Cooking Contest. This is a cooking contest aimed to encourage households in the urban areas (most especially the youth) to cook affordable and nutritious food using local agriculture products. This activity is also designed to develop vegetable recipes that are easy to prepare, affordable, and delicious.

II. Eligibiglity

The contest is open to all public high schools from the National Capital Region (NCR) represented by two students from one section in a participating school. Only one team per school is allowed.

Previous first and second prize winners of the O! May Gulay Cooking Contest are no longer eligible to join. Contestants who were not selected or did not win may join this year.

III. Contest Mechanics

    1.  The category is vegetable main dish only.

    2.  Recipes must use vegetables as main ingredients that are found in the local market and must be easy to prepare.

    3.  Contestants from each school are are grouped into six:

First Round of Competition

    4.  Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges, who will select the top 3 recipe entries from each group except in Group 6 (Quezon City). Since there are 46 high schools in Group 6 (Quezon City), it will be divided into four districts and will select top 3 recipe entries for each district in Quezon City.

    5.  The initial screening (paper-based elimination round) will be done on August 14, 2009 in Quezon City

Second Round of Competition

    6.  Eighteen teams (top 3 teams from each group) will move on to the next round of the competition. Representative teams will then be requested to bring a copy of the recipe together with a sample of the vegetable main dish (good for 6 individuals) for judging. Entry recipes must be prepared at home and brought to Quezon City on September 9-11, 2009.

    7.  Exhibits of entries must be entered only on the specific time to be announced. Only one winner will be selected from each NCR Division Group.

    8.  The following establishes the criteria for the second round:
                Palatability
                Nutritional Value
                Visual Appeal
                Creativity/Originality
                Ease of Preparation

Final Round of Competition and Awarding

    9.  The final round will be held in a mall (or a large public venue) on October 10, 2009. The final round will coincide with the culmination of the National Nutrition Month Celebration.

    10.  Each team is provided time to set-up their area.

    11.  All entries must be prepared on-site.

    12.  Each team will have a maximum of 1 hour to prepare the dish.

    13.  Each team will be provided with a designated area consisting of 2-4' long tables and gas stove.

    14.  Contestants must provide cutlery, cutting boards, dish towels, paper towels, pot holders, ingredients for recipe and any appliances not listed above.

    15.  Contestants are encouraged to wear clothing consistent with professional and safe food handling practices.

    16.  All the entries and materials submitted become the property of the Department of Agriculture. Recipes associated with accepted contestants may be used in future DA endeavors such as publications, cookbook, etc.

IV. Judges

Entries will be judge by the following:

Representative, Major Culinary School
Representative, DA-BAR
Representative, Vegetable Industry Council

All decisions of the judges are final.

V. Awards

Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each category.

First Prize - P20,000 + trophy + exposure trip to Baguio for the whole section (maximum of 50 students plus 2 teachers) + special prize for the school

Second Prize - P15,000 + trophy + exposure trip to Tagaytay for the whole section (maximum of 50 students plus 2 teachers) + special prize for the school

Third Prize - P10,000 + trophy + special prize for the school

Finalists will receive a consolation prize of P 5,000.

VI. Submission of Entries

    1.  Submit fully accomplished entry form and school's endorsement on or before 07 August 2009. An electronic copy of the recipe should also be sent via email at secyap@gmail.com or on disk. Only recipes submitted electronically in accordance with these rules will be eligible for consideration.

    2.  Teams who will qualify for the second round will be informed via phone call or email.
