ABOUT RICE AND ITS VARIETIES

Rice is one of the most important crop in the country. This is because every Filipino family eats rice, every meal, every day.

The plains of Central Luzon is considered the "Rice Bowl" of the country. This is because a large number of irrigated rice is grown in this side of the country.

Producing enough rice, though, to feed all Filipinos, has been hard. Some of the reasons are:

  1. irrigation system is not maintained very well because the money given to the people who maintain the irrigation is not enough.
  2. Pests and diseases
  3. The unpredictable timings of rain, and droughts.

But we have people who are finding, and studying, ways to make more rice. These people are from different universities, and other research bodies.

What they have in mind is to improve the conditions of the farmers, the rice producers. They are encouraged to use new methods in farming rice, as well as new varieties, that help in the problem of diseases and pests.

The growth of the rice involves two stages. The vegetative, which involves the germination, early seedling growth, and tillering; and the reproductive, which is the time before and after heading, or ripening.

Since the ultimate number of yield is determined during the heading/ripening, we might as well have three stages: the vegetative, reproductive, and ripening.
